Thought it was time you blokes worked for an answer! The player in question wore a gold crucifix and often kissed it between overs.
Another habit was to bang the handle end of his bat against his left palm and then twirl the bat before taking strike.
More clues: he hated batting practice and apart from a box, never wore any protective equipment. He was notorious for his slow walk to the crease.
