Who said, early in 1980 … “playing against a team with Ian Chappell as a captain turns a cricket match into gang warfare” … and what is strange about his statement? (answer both parts for the point)
The quote was from Mike Brearley. The unusual thing about it is that Brearley never played a Test match against a side captained by Ian Chappell.

Mike Brearley. He never played against a team led by Ian Chappell.
Mike Brearley
I can only speculate about why it was odd really. Perhaps because he much the same as a captain?
It was Mike Brearley. This is only my opinion as to what is strange about this quote. Firstly some people think he was a bit of a bully: Phil Edmonds and Fred Timus had issues with him.
He also possibly at times captained ouside of the spirit of the game himself: for instance sending everyone to the boundary including the wicket keeper to ensure that a boundary wasn't scored.
thirdly some people thought he had excellent people skills, so why did a people person get reduced to gang warefare. He's a psychoanalyst himself, he should be above this.
fourthly Punter is the true owner of this title.
(it's 11.00pm and this is a very incoherant thought process... sorry about that)
Deb :)
forgot to say that he was the english captain at the time...maybe he was turning it into gang warfare... because he was the leader of the other gang.
Well played all but Rod gets the point. Mike Brearley never played against a Test team captained by Ian Chappell. In fact, in a 20 year career, he only ever played two first class games against teams captained by Ian Chappell (Middlesex v Australia in 1972 and England v South Australia in 1979).
