RE Foster 287 at the SCG. He was on debut and ... (a point still available if you can complete what I need)
Okay, I'll take the other point. Foster's 287 is the highest score on debut in Test cricket.

R E Foster. 287 runs. It was his debut test for England, and I think he was captain for it. Scored on the SCG

Interestingly, Gus saw the beginning of Lara's 277? (also at the SCG, and I think the next highest score on the list). Lara began this innings, on the same day that Border got his 10,000. A pretty good day's cricket.

this is not part of the answer, just interesting fact. Part of the reason it was Tip Foster's first test, was that he had trouble fitting cricket around captaining the English Rugby team!
